De La Soul - Stakes Is High

1996's Stakes Is High was the first album not produced by Prince Paul, with overall production credits given solely to the trio, and again, was met with mixed results and poor sales.
The title track and first single, produced by Jay Dee, was not a hit, but second single Itsoweezee (HOT), with only Dave on vocals, did fare better due to its creative music video. The album spawned a third single 4 More featuring Zhane which failed to chart. The album did provide a launching pad for future star rapper and actor Mos Def, who appeared on the track "Big Brother Beat." The album also featured collaborations with Common (Sense), Truth Enola, and the Jazzyfatnastees.

Portishead - Roseland NYC Live (1997)

Roseland NYC Live is a live album by Portishead with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. It was released in 1998 by Go! Discs/London.

Performing with a 35-piece orchestra, Portishead runs through selections from its two albums, favoring its second slightly. On the surface, it doesn't seem like the orchestra would add much to the performances, especially since the arrangements remain similar, but its presence makes the music tense, dramatic, and breathtaking.

Ultramagnetic MC's - Critical Beatdown

Classic from Ultramagnetic MC's

Besides being an undeniable hip-hop classic, the first album by the cult crew Ultramagnetic MC's introduced to the world the larger-than-life, one-of-a-kind personality of Kool Keith. That alone would make this some sort of landmark recording, but it also happens to be one of the finest rap albums from the mid- to late-'80s "new school" in hip-hop that numbered among its contributors Run-D.M.C., Public Enemy, and Boogie Down Productions. Critical Beatdown maintains all its sharpness and every ounce of its power, and it has not aged one second since 1988.

Radiodread - Easy Star All-Stars

Radiodread is a 2006 album by the Easy Star All-Stars, a collaboration of reggae and ska artists. Radiodread is a complete, song by song makeover of Radiohead's OK Computer into reggae, ska, and dub.

Michael Goldwasser, who produced and arranged Radiodread:

"OK Computer has elements that are perfect [for reggae] -- strong melodies, intense dynamics and trippy soundscapes. On the other hand, it has complex time signatures, lots of chord changes and things that typically aren't found in reggae. However, the more we looked at it, the more we realized that this was an album we had to do. Radiohead has given their blessing to the tracks they've heard so far, and we are excited for them to hear the complete album."

No samples from OK Computer or any other music were used in making Radiodread. You don't even have to of heard Ok Computer to enjoy this, but if you have and are a Radiohead fan then this will blow you away!

Common - Can I Borrow a Dollar?

Can I Borrow A Dollar? shows Common's earlier style of rapping; namely a sing-songy and inflection-heavy vocal delivery, as well as lyrics packed with wordplay and popular culture allusions. The album's production, utilizing samples, keyboards, and drum breaks prominently, tends to be minimalistic, jazzy and laid back. The Source called the production top notch. Although receiving a lukewarm reception, Stanton Swihart of Allmusic considers it to have put Chicago hip hop on the map and to be an underrated debut album.
